In each of your residencies, you will engage with your classmates through a condensed in-person class complemented by social and networking events. The collaborative nature of the residency programming encourages teamwork and enhances your learning experience and growth toward your law degree. Plus, you’ll get to learn from Orange alumni who are leaders in their fields, from the Chief Operating Officer of JetBlue to the General Counsel for Starbucks.
Headed West: JDi Students Travel to Denver for Arbitration Residency
Embarking on the final stretch of their law school journey, upper-level JDi students face the pivotal and exciting task of selecting from a list of Advanced Legal Topics residencies that align with their interests. From busy cities in the U.S. to international landscapes of Geneva, Switzerland, and Rome, Italy, the options are as diverse as the students themselves. This year, 17 JDi students selected to enroll in the Arbitration Residency, held in Denver, Colorado from January 2-5, 2024 at the turn of the New Year.
JDi Students Kick Off 2024 with Syracuse-based Legal Applications and Professional Skills Residencies
First year students came for their Legal Applications Residency, their second of six total Residencies through the course of their legal education. Meanwhile, second-year students returned to Dineen Hall for concurrent Residencies three and four, immersing themselves in Professional Skills courses tailored to their interests and career aspirations. This vibrant start set the stage for a year of profound learning and growth.

JDi Residencies through the Student’s Eye
JDi Residency Topics and Locations
During the lower-division courses, you’ll engage on Syracuse University’s scenic campus.
The upper-division courses open the doors to major cities worldwide, where you’ll have the opportunity to learn in esteemed law firms and work alongside top-tier practitioners. You’ll also embark on exploration trips to major corporations, courts, and agencies, spanning cities such as NYC, D.C., Charlotte, Denver, Los Angeles, London, Geneva, Rome, and Strasbourg.
Syracuse Law J.D. Residential students may also participate in these upper-division residency courses alongside their JDi peers as space allows.

Residency 1: Legal Foundations
Year 1, Semester 1, Syracuse, NY
At the beginning of your JDi experience, your inaugural residency will concentrate on the foundations of law. All JDi students are required to attend this residency at the College of Law before commencing their first semester.
Typically scheduled for the third week of August, this mandatory residency lays the groundwork for your successful passage through law school. Designed as a pre-cursor to your coursework, this residency equips you with the essential knowledge to thrive in your legal education.
Residency 2: Legal Applications
Year 1, Semester 2, Syracuse, NY
Prior to your second semester in the JDi program, this Legal Applications residency spans six full days of in-person classes and takes place at the College of Law during the first week of January.
Residencies 3 and 4: Professional Skills
Year 2, Semester 5, Syracuse, NY – Must be completed concurrently
You may choose two experiential courses based on your interests and career aspirations for your third and fourth residencies. Topics include Negotiation, Client Counseling, Trial Advocacy, and many others.
JDi students take these residencies concurrently in the same week at the College of Law.
Residencies 5 and 6: Advanced Legal Topics
Year 3 or 4, Dates and Locations May Vary – Cannot be completed concurrently
During your final residencies, you’ll have the chance to engage in a “deep dive” of a specialized field of legal practice, providing a valuable opportunity to learn from and network with experts in your chosen legal area of interest.
These final intensive residencies are four to five days in length and are offered various times throughout the year.
Topics have included Arbitration, Asset Finance, Elder Law, International Human Rights, and many others.
